Tough Morning
It was hard to wake up this morning, and I had a tough time sleeping, mostly because I knew I had to get up early, and I had no other choice but to run in the morning. The alarm went off at 6:30am, and once I was outta bed, it was game time. I was also excited to try on my new shoes for the first run. Oh yeah, let me fill in a little bit about my shoe shopping...
Buying New Shoes
Yesterday during my rest day, I went to Fleet Feet Sports in Chesterfield to get fitted for a shoe. Eric was so helpful, and educated me during the entire shoe fitting process. He said my left foot was slightly longer than my right, and that I had medium to high arches. He recommended the Asics GT-2100 shoes, size 11.5. Normally I'm a 10.5 or 11, but he said the feet get longer as you run longer, so there needs to be room in the "toe box" to make up for the room you're gonna need during longer runs. As soon as I put them on, it was like Heaven for my feet. The arches were nice and solid, and yet I had so much toe room and they were wider, too. He wanted me to take a quick run down the strip mall to try them out. I ran down a couple stores and back. He said they matched the way I run. He told me I overpronate when I run, which means that I tend to curve in when my foot leaves the ground and I push from my front toe. So, these shoes will help stabilize that. He said that 70% of runners tend to overpronate. These shoes will be good for about 400 running miles, then they should be replace about 2 weeks before the marathon. When we got back into the store, Eric said the theory at Fleet Feet Sports is "cotton is rotten". He showed me the line of socks they carry, which are completely synthetic. They don't hold in moisture like cotton socks do, and they don't get holes in them either. I bought four pair.
The Run
So, back to my morning jog, it was a little misty and cool. I didn't have any problems jogging. My side didn't hurt like it did earlier in the week, and the cool mist on my face just cooled me down. I didn't have problems with shin-splits like I have in the past, and I was thrilled with the new training shoes.
Joints in Motion Kick-off Party
Later in the evening, the Joints in Motion team had their kick-off party, and everyone who is committed to the marathon in Anchorage, Alaska was at the party. Even Smash showed up to thank everyone for joining his team, and he called me later that night and said he was happy to see me make this big commitment. We receive packets and signed committment forms. Everyone on the team is so friendly, and the coaches and support staff will be phenomenal. We talked about fundraising ideas and watched a slide show of those who ran previous marathons. Debby from Fleet Feet Sports also stopped by and demonstrated training apparel. She talked about shoes, socks, clothing and accessories such as sport bottles and energy gel packs. She is giving everyone who is running the marathon a 10% discount on anything purchased from now until the marathon at Fleet Feet Sports. She even rebated my account for the training shoes I bought yesterday. I'm looking forward to getting some clothing and accessories in the coming weeks.
| THOUGHTS: |
If I can get my butt outta bed early every morning, I'd do it. Maybe after getting up consistenly at 7:00am for training on Saturday mornings may help me adjust to getting up this early. I felt so energetic all day because of the morning run. |
