First Day as a Joints in Motion Team Member
I was excited about getting up early to jog this morning. This was the first official training day according to the schedule from the Arthritis Foundation. I tried to get to bed early, and tossed and turned quite a bit. I really enjoyed getting up early. I'm starting to see the same people that get up that time of morning. Something was going on around the park, because KMOV Channel 4 did a live broadcast from one of the park's corners, and as I was leaving, KSDK Channel 5's van was circling the park. Never figured out what was going on.
The Run
During my run, I didn't have any pain. Initially, I could feel the arch supports on my right shoe more than normal, but that went away after about a half-mile. On the last turn, when I was about 1/4 the way to the end of the run, I had a burst of energy, and went twice as fast as I normally run. It was insane. I think I was just excited that I was going to finish the run under 11 minutes a mile. I felt great all day, and hit the bed early to do it all again tomorrow.
Coworkers in the St. Louis Marathon
Today, I was able to read the results of the St. Louis Marathon that took place Sunday, April 10th. One of our FOX 2 employees, Gregory Schrick, finished 10th overall in the race with a phenomenal time of 2:51:53. Also, FOX Sports Net employee David Pokorny finished 9th overall with a time of 2:47:53. That's an average running speed of around 6:30/mile. THAT'S AMAZING! I remember running when I was in my best shape a couple years ago, and I was happy to run 5 miles averaging 8:48/mile. And I believe this is Schrick's first marathon he's ever run. When he gets back into work after recovering, I have to ask him some questions about it. Of course, he's a thin guy and always has been. He even walks to work most the time, since he lives only a couple miles away.
| THOUGHTS: |
Don't take vitamins before you jog. That's the WORST aftertaste once you start running. ICK! The vitamin can wait until I hit the shower back home. |

The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer
This book is based on the highly successful marathon class offered by the University of Northern Iowa. That is approximately 200 students -- all first time marathoners and many with absolutely no running background. This book follows the same 16-week, four-day-a-week workout plan. What makes the success rate of this program so much higher than any other? The special emphasis on the psychological aspects of endurance activities.
This book was given to us by Rich, our Joints in Motion Training Coach. I had purchased it last weekend and started reading it already, so I was able to return that one and keep this one. It's a great guide that gives a week by week schedule and you hear thoughts from the runners in the classroom as well. I can even relate to one of the classmates! |
