The Run
Lindsey was in town this weekend and joined me for support this morning. She took some photos of me "in action". We arrived at the park late, because I didn't think Forest Park was that far from where I live now. When we got to the meeting station next to the History Museum, everyone but one person had left for the run. The team was about 10 minutes ahead of me. So, I took off at a normal speed, and if I caught up with them...great! If not, that's ok, too. It was a long run, so I didn't want to overdo it. Lindsey had stayed back at the tent, and eventually did some walking herself for about a mile or so, since she knew I was going to be gone for about an hour.
The scenery was nice! I passed some dinosaur statues, the Science Center's Planetarium, the St. Louis Zoo, and the History Museum. The park was crowded, mostly because the March Of Dimes was having their walk-a-thon in the morning. But there were a lot of regular runners on the path. Forest Park really has it organized. They have three separate paths for biking/running, running and walking. We stayed on the biking/running trail, since it was on the outer edge of the park. There were some good uphill climbs in Miles 3 and 4, but there was also a great straight downhill run during Mile 5, and that's when I caught up with Coach Rich, Jan and Shelly. I didn't think I would see them at all. Last week, we all finished about the same time, but I didn't think I could gain 10 minutes on them. Well, I only slowed down to walk a couple times for about a minute up until the time I knew I could catch up to them, and when I finally caught up, I was pretty exhausted. I was also out of water, so Coach Rich filled my bottle up with some of his ice-cold water, which was so refreshing, it helped me get through that final mile. By the end of the run, I was sweating pretty bad because it heated up so quick. But soon after I took off my pullover, the cold air was getting to me, and within a couple minutes, I was getting cold again. Lindsey and I had to leave before the walking party finished, but overall l had a great run.
Buying Much Needed Gear
Lindsey and I went to Fleet Feet Sports, and I bought more socks, because now I wear them most everyday, since they don't lock in moisture. They are much more comfy than the cotton ones. Also, Lindsey bought me a water bottle holder that fits around the waist. It hold about 32 oz of water in 4 small bottles, and after today, I know I'm going to need that. Plus, warmer days and longer runs start next week. I also grabbed a stick of body glide (which helps relieve the rubbing of skin and chafing). I also tried on some running sunglasses, but didn't buy any.
You've Got Mail!
I was pleasantly surprised to see my first round of sponsorship envelopes in the mail today, as well as some online! How exciting! I love to read people's comments, which I post on the sponsorship page. Each envelope I open and read makes me stronger and more determined to complete this marathon. I'm so glad I'm doing this in honor of my sister. I know she is thrilled, too.
The Painfully Pleasant Massage
So, Lindsey gave me an incredible massage today. I'm getting knots in different areas each day. Today was the first time we noticed some knots on both sides of my lower back. I think they're from the constant pounding during the run. She worked on them pretty hard (digging her elbows into them) and also digged into the legs. I drank a lot of water most of the day. We topped off the morning with a great pasta lunch at Tumo's Ristorante in the city. I carbed up!
| THOUGHTS: |
Today I can say I'm ready for 8 miles next weekend. I feel like my endurance has built up for that. Looking forward to the consistent weight loss and muscle gain. Thank you to those who sponsored me today. Please check the site often for updates. Love you all! |
