First of All, the Diagnosis
I visited the doctor yesterday morning, and he said I had a case of Sialadenitis, which is inflammation of the salivary gland. Allergies did not cause this as I had assumed. He said it's very rare for someone my age to get this infection. He prescribed Augmentin (an antibiotic) and Diclofenac Sodium (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). He told me to get some lemon drops to help stimulate the salivary glands. Then, he recommended a blood test just as a precaution. I told him about changing my mouthwash, and he suggested not using it anymore. I'm supposed to take the meds for 10 days, which means I'm taking them through the marathon. The big side effect of these drugs? Diarrhea. Wait a minute...DIARRHEA?!  I'm running a marathon! I can't have that! I told him I'd better pack more Pepto Bismol tablets! He said Pepto Bismol doesn't work as well as Ammodium AD. I filled the prescriptions and started taking the meds right away. By this morning, my face felt better, but I still felt my face swollen when I first drank my Gatorade. I'm hoping the inflammation will go away by this Thursday, so I don't have to worry about diarrhea during the run.  I've been so lucky during training with never having it, and I certainly don't want to feel it on Mile 10 with no portapottys around.

Being Totally Unprepared
I didn't run with the team this morning. Instead, I drove to Crainville, Illinois last night to see Lindsey, with the intentions of getting up early to run. I didn't get rolling until 9:00am, though.  I thought I heard temps were going to drop quite a bit, but they didn't. It was another scorcher, and now that it was so late in the morning, it would be even hotter than I'm used to in the morning. I didn't eat anything before the run, and I was having "side effect" trouble, too. I took two Pepto chewables and hit the road.

My Legs Feel Great!
That massage last night at Massage Envy was truly miraculous! I had to soooo much lactic acid buildup in my legs, and my calf muscles have been hurting ever since the 21-miler three weeks ago, and somehow the therapist rubbed it right out! I have no pain whatsoever in my legs.  This is a first since the beginning of training! I highly recommend massages at least once a month during training. I wish I had massages before now.

The Run
The first 4 miles of training were pretty easy, except for the heat.  I was running about a 10:30/mile pace (which is average for me), and I was enjoying the scenery from Crainville to Herrin, Illinois. After the first 10 minutes, the "side effect" went away. By the time I had to turn around to complete the second 4 miles, I was really feeling the heat, and I could feel myself starting to get a sunburn.  I only packed two 8-oz water bottles on my belt, and they were unusually warm.  I walked for a couple minutes to cool myself down, but after a mile of running again, I was exhausted and went back to walking. My mouth was really drying up, and I could feel my glands swelling a little bit.  I was also getting cottonmouth from the infection, and I was completely out of fluids. I was looking at every house, hoping to find a spicket where I could steal some water without the homeowners knowing.  I was really desperate.  I finally stuck it out and ran the last mile, trying to not think about the cottonmouth and heat exhaustion. I was so unprepared for today. When I got back to Lindsey's place, I drank lots of water and continued drinking more than usual the rest of the day....and dealing with diarrhea.  Lovely.

THOUGHTS: I was so unprepared for today. Now I know what happens when I have cottonmouth, diarrhea, and a case of sleeping in.
WHAT I'LL
REMEMBER MOST:
The cottonmouth from the infection.
