I Wasn't Looking Forward to Running Today
It was the day after a holiday weekend, and work was hectic just catching up. It was still hot out, and I forgot to pack my running gear. So, making a trip back home and then back to the park set me late, and investing at least 1 1/2 hours of time of nothing but running...can you tell I'm just not motivated?
The Run
Well, my attitude changed as soon as I arrived at the park. There was a nice cool breeze, and the air was soooo dry! It was hot, but it felt like the tropics. My legs felt great, and suddenly I wanted to run. I practiced my interval training (5 miles faster, 1 minute walking), and kept up with it the whole time. I checked my watch after my first mile, and I was running 9:17/mile! That was encouraging. I was hoping to keep that pace up, but HA! Impossible. Just keeping a 10:00/mile pace was tough. I did complete the entire run around Forest Park in 57:45, but I still had to run 2 1/2 more miles to complete the 8-miler. By the time I finished, the sun was setting and it was getting much cooler. It was a perfect night for running. I felt so good about the run, that I said to myself, 'Hey I could run 8 miles everyday and I keep in great shape! That wasn't bad at all!'
"No Fat" Policy Goes Into Effect...NOW!
Ok. I'm not really losing weight, and it's really getting to me. How is it that I run 30 miles a week, but still have a li'l belly? Maybe I'll just cut out anything that has fat in it. If I know it has fat, it's out! Sure, they tell me I can eat anything and not gain weight, and that is true! But, I want to lose weight. So consider this the first day of my new policy. I had a great lunch with my bud Sean at work. We went to "The Fatted Calf" today, and the burger was so delish! Let that be the last time I eat fat!
A Letter from my Cousin
I received a letter from my cousin Mandy Jahnsen, who lives in Carrollton, Texas. She was with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training. Her marathon training ended when she had a stress fracture in her left ankle. Her doctor said she would not be able to continue training. It was a difficult decision for her, but she feels good knowing 100% of her money goes to a great cause. She heard about my marathon and wishes me luck.
| THOUGHTS: |
The 8-miler has come and gone. I remember this day being so far away, and now it's behind me. I'm starting to feel like this won't be the only marathon I'll run in my lifetime. |
WHAT I'LL

July 5: The fancy Mile 1 marker at Forest Park. SLTC stands for St. Louis Track Club. Even though the track club painted the new mile markers, no one is quite sure if they are accurate, claiming 5.65 miles around the park.

July 5: Part of the trail between Mile 1 and Mile 0. The left side is a gravel path for runners only. The right side is an asphalt path for runners and cyclists. I run the asphalt path.
