Hurricane Dennis Brings Some Much Needed Rain
It started raining around noon today, and it hasn't stopped. It was a medium rain, and the temps were perfect for running. I was excited to try out all the pieces of this new running gear (watch, GPS, heart monitor, data recorder). It was taking forever for the GPS unit to sync up with the satellites, and I accidentally dropped in on the concrete while trying to strap it on my shoulder. I think the heavy clouds and rain are keeping it from syncing up. I just put it in my pocket. The heart rate monitor was working great. I walked over to the park, and passed by FOX 2 Meteorologist Dave Murray (he was driving through Forest Park when I started the run). After 15 minutes, the GPS unit just gives up syncing, so I left it in my pocket and started the run in the rain.
The Run
I wore a hat, which really helped keep the rain out of my face. Last time I ran in rain, it was hard to see because my contacts kept getting wet. I noticed right away that my heart rate was down quite a bit. I was averaging 149bpm on Saturday, and I was starting the run in the 130s. I think the rain cooled my body down, so the heart didn't have to work as hard. It felt like I was carrying 20 pounds more because I was all wet, but after a while, it didn't bother me. The rain felt so good. It was never a downpour...just steady medium rain the whole time. I was expecting more runners at the park, since there wasn't lightning or thunder, but I guess only the hardcore runners hit the pavement in the rain. There was that certain smile coming from the other runners as I passed them...we were all thinking, "this is great weather, isn't it?"
Office Talk
Word is getting around the office that I'm running a marathon. I guess more people are seeing my flyer next to my desk, and the response has been extremely supportive. I've had conversation with out 5 different people about it. How encouraging! I still think it's funny knowing my boss reads my blogs...
The AlaskaCam
I have that webcam on my home page of downtown Anchorage Alaska, and as I was posting my blog on June 12th, this BUG popped up on the cam. I saved the pic and sent it to the AlaskaCam folks, and they loved it! They posted it on their site. It's titled, "BugZilla".
| THOUGHTS: |
I'm just getting started with the heart monitoring, so I don't know what to expect yet when I see my rate go from an average of 149 to 142. We'll see in the coming days. Today was a great run in the rain. I hope the equipment truly is waterproof. |
WHAT I'LL
REMEMBER MOST: |
Passing the sand volleyball players in the rain at the park. |

I logged onto my website back in June, and saw this photo on the Alaska webcam on my home page! FREAKY! Attack of the killer bugs in Anchorage!
The Alaska Cam folks loved it and they posted it on their website as well, calling it "BugZilla"
