May 10, 2005, 6:30pm: Be careful what I wish for...

GOAL:  5 miles
LOCATION:  Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri
CONDITIONS: 88° sunny, sticky and HOT
RESULTS: 5.2 miles
TIME: 52:47
PACE: 10:05/mile
TOTAL TRAINING MILES TO DATE (walking & running): 117 miles

First HOT day. ICK!
Wasn't it just 3 weeks ago I was running in 40° weather, wishing for hotter weather?
What happened?! It's almost 90° and it was tough today! Luckily, I brought GU and three bottles of Propel to get me through it...and I used it all!

The Run
I hit the trail at a pretty good pace right off the start. It's better for me to run up the hilly section first, then take the long downhill run along Skinker. I hit the GU about Mile 2, but I'm not sure if it kicked in or not.  I felt something about halfway through Mile 5, but not sure if that was adrenaline because the end was near, or if it was the GU kicking in. I sweat bad today.  I don't know what I would have done if I had a normal cotton shirt on. I wore my "whisking" shirt, and it was definitely soaked when I finished. I really wanted to finish between a 9 - 10/mile pace, but the heat got to me, and I feel great getting 10:05/mile. I think I've finally figured out these mile markers, but it's weird because of that extra .2 miles in the run, which is right at the halfway point of the trail near the History Museum. I can't get around it, though, since I walk to the park from work, and the .2 mile marker is on the other side of the park.  The only real way to avoid it is to drive over to the History Museum and run from there.

How Many on Saturday?
I'm running 10 miles this Saturday morning? That's twice of what I did today.  I don't know how I'm going to do it! I guess with me running in the morning hours on Saturday, that will help with avoiding the heat as much as possible.

THOUGHTS: I was exhausted, but SOOO glad I was prepared with my water bottles, "whisk" shirt and some GU. Yeah me.
