FOX 2 has a lot of runners on staff!
Not only have I chatted with FOX 2 colleagues John Pertzborn (just finished Boston Marathon), David Pokorney (9th overall St. Louis Marathon), Greg Schrick (10th overall St. Louis Marathon), but I also talked with Katie Scailes, who just finished the Disney half-marathon in January and also did a half in the St. Louis Marathon last year. She raised $4,500 for the Disney trip, and said she loved it! She said the marathon started in the very early hours of the morning, so that it would be finished by the time the park opened. The marathon was on one of the hottest days of the year, hitting 80° by 9:00am. Even though she has run two half-marathons, she still doesnt' consider herself a "runner". Maybe a full marathon is what she needs.
Getting Multiple Checks in the Mail!
To my surprise, I received one envelope with several checks in it today! It was from my cousin who lives in Puerto Rico, Steve Gronski. I think he looked on my website earlier this week and wanted to help put me over the $2,000 mark, so he twisted arms in his office and pulled $136.20 for me! All right! That was exciting, plus I hadn't seen a check written in Spanish before, so that was cool! (Thanks Valerie!) Steve, you made my day, and even though I had passed the $2,000 mark when I received your envelope, it's even better to say you put me over the $2,300 mark! Thank you!!!
The Run
It had rained all night, and I was assuming this would be the day I'd run in the rain. I checked the radar online and noticed that the rain looked like it was over in St. Charles, and sure enough, I pulled up to the Joints in Motion tent, and it had stopped raining. It was a cool 59° and breezy. The 10-miler was two out-and-back runs: 6 miles through downtown St. Charles, and 4 miles along the Katy Trail. Coach Rich was with me the entire time, which again, made it seem like a quick run. We had great conversations from the normal running advice to obscure things like selling on eBay and touring the country eating McDonalds (which I would never do, of course). At one point, a group of runners training for Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN passed us, and one of the girls on that team was training for a 50-miler. After the first out-and-back, the Katy Trail was so comforting on the body with the gravel trail. The part through St. Charles was half asphalt, half concrete, so I was happy to be on gravel. The sun wasn't beating down on us at all, and my pace was slower, which really didn't matter to me.
| THOUGHTS: |
I was glad I was able to finish the 10 miles without any pain. I can't believe I'm only 3 miles away from a half-marathon. I'm sure I'll be doing the half-marathon in Maryville, MO next month. |
